Strategic Plan (Renata Bratt)
Renata Bratt asked for suggestions for future development of the String Caucus.
Attendees were referred the the IAJESQ Mission Statement:
"The Jazz String Caucus provides guidance to educators regarding curricula
and performance; assists teachers and practitioners with relevant resources;
and takes an active role in organizing clinics, festivals and symposia at
local, regional, national and international levels. The Jazz String Caucus
makes its services available both within the auspices of IAJE programs as
well as to the community of string teachers and players at large.
"The Jazz String Caucus believes that interest in jazz on strings is greater
than ever before, and that there exists a tremendous and largely unmet
demand for educational resources. The Jazz String Caucus therefore strives
to make a basic improvisational fluency available to every string player: a
skill that we believe is essential in nurturing the complete musical
development of the twenty-first century string player.
Scholarships: Laura Reed proposed a student scholarship program. Tanya Kalmanovitch suggested that String Caucus members encourage their students to apply for existing IAJE scholarship programmes.
Educational programmes: Cathy Morris suggested that the String Caucus sponsor exchange programmes, performances across the United States, and school concerts. Tanya Kalmanovitch mentioned that members of the AF of M might be eligible for partial sponsorship of artists’ fees under the MPTF programme. John Kuzmich suggested that the String Caucus' efforts should be initially directed towards the college level, and that the String Caucus should produce a set of cohesive principles for improvising string education (basic competencies, instructional materials, CDs, videos, etc.)
Website: The Resource Team Co-chairs are currently featured on the IAJE webpage, but it was agreed that the Jazz String Caucus should have a webpage of its own. Julie Lyonn Lieberman offered to coordinate the webpage.
Networking: Yehudit suggested that the String Caucus facilitate networking between its members.
Arranging & composing: Reva Kuzmich suggested that the String Caucus encourage jazz arrangers to write for strings. Paula Zeitlin suggested that the String Caucus encourage string entries to composer competitions.

"The Jazz String Caucus is dedicated to assuring the continued growth and
development of string jazz and jazz education by promoting improvisational
skills for all string players, and by providing specialized string
curriculum, training, and resource information to string and jazz educators.
Competition: Martin Norgaard reported on his meeting with Pat Harbison to learn what efforts other interest groups of the IAJE have made. Martin proposed that the String Caucus establish a competition for non-classical string performance. Winners of the competition would perform at the IAJE conference on both amplified and acoustic instruments, in string quartet and jazz combo settings. He also reported that the African American Caucus and the Sisters in Jazz programme have established employment and mentoring programmes.
The question of whether the String Caucus should file for non-profit status was discussed. It was agreed that the String Caucus should hold off on filing for non-profit status pending further discussion. In the meanwhile, it was agreed that the String Caucus should become a dues-based membership organization, with the current email list remaining open to non-members and members alike. Membership dues will provide both a source of capital and the financial history needed should the organization decide to file for non-profit status at a later date.
Laura Reed reported on the IAJE Teacher Training Institute, which was successful and widely promoted within the ASTA.
Paula Zeitlin and Martin Norgaard reported on the status of the IAJE curriculum committee, and new members volunteered to provide input regarding string curriculum.
Martin Norgaard reported on efforts to re-release classic jazz string recordings (Violin Summit and others), and is looking to find a company interested in licensing and releasing these recordings. He requested suggestions for accomplishing this (e.g. collaborating with the Women’s Caucus in releasing recordings of Ginger Smock).
Renata Bratt reported on publications by String Caucus members in the past year, and encouraged members to submit articles on string improvisation to all relevant journals and publications.
Julie Lieberman reported on the features of the stringscentral.com website and requested more submissions.
Christine Harrington will coordinate the string music reading session for the 2003 IAJE Conference. Music read will feature both improvised and written-our solos.
Members were encouraged to plan to attend the 2003 IAJE Conference in Toronto, and to submit a variety of clinic, performance and panel topics. Tanya Kalmanovitch pointed out that Canada is incredibly inexpensive.
